There has been talk, and now comes the reality. After grossing over $250 million domestically and nearly $600 million worldwide, WB has set official plans to make a prequel to I Am Legend.
Don't you hate it when studios make needless sequels to popular films and release them straight to DVD? But wait! This is a full blown deal. Director Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) is back to direct the ultra charismatic Smith from a script ground out over the past few months from the minds of Lawrence, Smith, producer James Lassiter, and prequel scribe D.B. Weiss.
The first film, while a bit uneven, was really enjoyable and expertly acted. Let's just hope they try a little something new with the CG this time.
The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city.
There's something about a Lawrence films that keep us coming back for more, and it's hard to put your finger on them. They are enjoyable, well cast, and overall solid entertainment.
