1990s Vertigo Comic Preacher has been picked up by Columbia Pictures with Sam Mendes readying himself for the director's chair.
Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher, which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon.
Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.
Preacher has had its difficulties getting to any screen. Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil, Ghost Rider) had written a script for a pilot for HBO, which later went into turnaround. Kevin Smith's production company, View Askew, also had a script for a film and even got the casting stage with James Marsden and a $25 million dollar budget that never came to pass. Let hope with talent the size of Mendes', we finally see this thing all the way through.
