Bloody sequels go 3D

I'll admit that 3D is pretty impressive when used correctly. I'm not a big fan of every movie going 3D just for shits and giggles, so I find it a little weird when a couple of low budget comedy sequels are in the works in 3D.

According to Variety, Sony is in the process of bringing back the Zombieland team for a second installment, but in 3D. And Paramount has greenlit a third Jackass, which will also be shot in 3D. While 3D films are as uncommon as they used to be, they have mainly been reserved for animated flicks and big budget blockbusters (cough cough Avatar), not so much for the small, bloody comedies.

"Everyone had fun watching (the first) Zombieland; making it a more visceral experience can only make it better," said the film's producer Gavin Polone. "I don't think you want to see 'Ordinary People' in 3-D. But Zombieland is clearly one movie that will benefit from (the technique)."

Sony has closed deals with Polone and helmer Ruben Fleischer to return for a sequel to the original, and the studio is currently in talks with stars Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg to reprise their roles.

MTV Films is even further along with Jackass 3, with filming scheduled to begin Jan. 25.

Are you going to want to see someone staple their butt cheeks together in 3D? Oh, who am I kidding...?

A couple shots from the fourth and final film, titled Shrek Forever After, appeared in Wednesday's USA Todayalong with the skinny on the plot, which is described as the Brothers Grimm meets It's a Wonderful Life. New cast additions include Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as a handsome ogre and Kathy Griffin and Kristin Schall (Flight of the Conchords) as a pair of ogre-hunting witches. Mike Mitchell (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Sky High) will direct.

The trailer for Shrek Forever After will premiere Dec. 18 at screenings of Avatar.

Adam Sandler is the butt of his own jokes

As with most comedians who make a name for themselves with raunchy jokes aimed at guys in their mid-20s, Adam Sandler has hit a lull in his career. How do I know? Over the weekend my little sister told me how hilarious Bedtime Stories was. Enough said.

Expect things to get worse before they get better since Variety announced today that Sandler will star in the romantic comedy Jack and Jill, which is written by Todd Garner (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and will be produced by Happy Madison. Sandler will play Jack as well as his twin sister Jill.

Actors always seem to start taking pansy roles like this once their
kids grow up and are old enough to realize what they do. Since Los
Angeles is basically a lawless place for celebrities anyways, I say we
create a compound with an endless supply of drugs, alcohol and
scantily clad models for actors as they move into their twilight years
to discourage them from going soft. It'll be kind of like a retirement
home only with less suicide.

Need a "Vacation"? This isn't it.

Get ready to go on another adventure with the Griswolds because
National Lampoon's Vacation is back with yet another installment. This time the story arc will follow Clark's son, Rusty, who now has a
family of his own that he decides to take on a road trip. David Dobkin
(Wedding Crashers, Fred Claus) is already attached to produce and
possibly direct the upcoming film while New Line is meeting with
writers to find somebody to pen the script.

Keep in mind that the first three Vacation movies (Vacation, European Vacation and Christmas Vacation) were all written by John
Hughes and turned out quite well. By that same token Vegas Vacation
was not written by Hughes and turned out pretty crappy. I can only
assume Hughes wasn't working on another Vacation script because he had better things to do than write straight-to-DVD movies. (or did he? Hello Beethoven's 4th!)

I'd also like to do a video recap of how the actors who played the
Griswold kids never looked remotely similar to actors from the
previous movie - it was like Stevie Wonder did the casting. For all we
know they might cast Ice Cube and hope to cash in on both people that enjoyed Are We There Yet? I can only hope Chevy Chase isn't drunk enough to sign on for this piece of garbage. Your thoughts?

Another tentpole for 2011

Picture
Like watching robots fight and blow stuff up as Shia LaBeouf shrieks at everything and fawns over Megan Fox, who is such a great girlfriend because she dresses like a complete tramp to save the world? Well, get ready for more of the same exact same shit because director Michael Bay has already started working on a new script with Transformers 1 & 2 writer Ehren Kruger on the third outing. Insert racial joke here.

Toy company Hasbro announced today that Megatron and company will return to theaters July 11, 2011. Can't you already imagine the computer graphic that cleverly changes July 11 into 2011? Studios are so clever and original.

Transformers 3 jumps into an already crowded pool of movies set to release in the summer of 2011. Spider Man 4, Thor and The Hangover 2 will all release in May and are followed by The Green Lantern and the Kung Fu Panda sequel in June. July is bursting at the seams with the second part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The First Avenger: Captain America, Battleship and The Smurfs. Disney plans to release the latest installment of Pirates of the Caribbean that summer as well.  At this rate, my summer 2010 preview might read: "save your money and stay at home, 2011 is gonna be a doozy."

Noooooo! Guess which teen series Diablo Cody to ruin forever...

Okay, so this is for all the ladies out there, as, fellas, I'm sure you couldn't give two shits about this, but it's being reported that Diablo Cody, of Juno and Jennifer's Body "fame," will be adapting the Sweet Valley High series for the big screen.

Cue gasps!

Okay, fine, Diablo Cody has an Oscar. Big deal; Ben Affleck got one for writing too, so suck it. But, I cannot condone Cody with the most beloved series of my youth. I spent many nights trying to decide which Wakefield twin I was--always hoping for the wild and crazy Jessica but knowing I was more the practical Elizabeth. They had blonde hair and blue eyes just like MEEEEEE. Seriously, I read almost all 150 books out there--even the racy college ones. I even watched the shitty TV show in the '90s to get my fix. So, why on earth is Diablo "I'm too fucking hip for my own good" Cody helming this project?

It's not known what the story will be or who any of the key players will be other than Cody, but this marks her THIRD high school flick, and I'm seriously wondering if Cody remembers high school. It wasn't all indie rock and quirky pop culture references--especially not with the Wakefield twins.

I know most of you Movie Pressers could care less about this news, but I, for one, am pissed. Please, Diablo Cody, don't fuck up my youth!

Thank you.

"Sherlock Holmes" Gearing up for Sequel?

9/22/2009

According to Variety Warner Bros. is in talks to set the screenwriting team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney to pen a sequel to Sherlock Holmes. Studio's aiming to launch a franchise with Sherlock, set to open on Christmas. Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams star in the pic directed by Guy Ritchie.

The basis for the film is both the Arthur Conan Doyle classic stories and the comicbook Sherlock Holmes, with an aim more at the hardcore Sherlock Holmes and less the stuffy condescending pipe smoker.

But here is where some interesting rumor control comes to play. Apparently Guy Ritchie is currently re-shooting some scenes and many believe it to be a branch to connect the first and second films with none other than Brad Pitt in a cameo role as Moriarty. Now this is pure speculation and nothing has been substantiated, so take it as suc. But imagine a world where Jude Law, Robert Downey Jr., Brad Pitt, and Guy Ritchie all get to make a movie together. Awesome right? And not totally outlandish as Ritchie likes to work with the same actors a lot e.g. Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones.

Spidey to swing back into theaters in 2011

The fourth Spider-Man installment has spun a release date of May 6, 2011.

Columbia Pictures confirmed that the latest flick in the comicbook franchise  will premiere in both traditional and IMAX theaters on the date, making it the first summer tentpole that year.

It won't be the only comic book movie vying for attention that summer. The May date had previously been occupied by another superhero pic, Marvel Studios' planned launch of The First Avenger: Captain America before it moved to July 22, 2011. Marvel will also launch Thor that summer, on June 17.

Spider-Man 4 reunites helmer Sam Raimi with franchise stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Gary Ross is penning the script. Boo! Bring back Michael Chabon!

Sounds like summer 2011 will kick ass. Too bad we couldn't say the same for this summer... Are you guys going to be excited for this Spider-Man, or did the emo dance sequence of the third film scare you off for good?

"Hancock 2" set to take flight

Peter Berg just let slip that, "everybody's going to come back for a sequel (to Hancock)", at TIFF. This is exciting news, and I saw the mountain of potential that was Hancock and liked it. Sure it had some short comings, but overrall it was a good time at the theatre and I like Berg as a director.

Berg went on to give away some plot details. Theron and Smith are coming back as immortal beings who weaken one another when in their presence. Nevertheless, they must pair up to destroy a third "entity". The movie will also explore their 3,000 year old home world which was only hinted at in the first film. Bateman will play his lovable everyman PR executive. No release date is set, and the script is still in the writing stage.

Guy Ritchie is going "Lobo"

9/3/2009

The Hollywood Reporter is well...reporting that Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct his first superhero movie, Lobo, a big-screen translation of the DC Comics anti-hero.

Lobo is an blue-skinned cigar-chomping alien who is an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. The character is one of DC’s more recent creations (he was introduced in the 1980s by creators Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen) and for a brief run in the 1990s, was one of comicdom’s most popular characters.

Lobo was meant to serve as a parody of violent heroes such as Wolverine and the Punisher, with his stories featuring a nihilistic streak tinged with dark comedy and excessive violence. Which sounds right out of Ritchie's wheelhouse.

Don Payne (My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Rise of the Silver Surfer) is penning the screenplay for the oft-delayed film that should beging production early next year.
