That badass-looking District 9 trailer has left some fanboys wondering if first-time director Neill Blomkamp is still on board for the Halo movie. Based off the uber-popular videogame franchise, intentions to make a Halo film were announced in 2005 with Peter Jackson as producer and Blomkamp as director. At the time, the relatively unknown filmmaker used his shaky, documentary-style approach to create an award-winning series of short Halo films. After starting and stopping production several times, Blomkamp declared the film dead in 2007.
Speaking to /Film.com, Blomkamp said speculation that he was doing the vaguely Halo-looking District 9 to prove himself for Halo are untrue.
"I worked on it for five months…I put a lot of sort of sweat and blood into Halo. Creatively, it’s very compelling. I love it. But, when you work that long on something and you have it bottom out and collapse…I mean, I got District 9 out of it, I think I’m probably better off because it’s more of a personal film. But yeah, I love the world of Halo. I don’t think I would go back there."
No doubt, we could do without another Alien-inspired space marine movie, but if the District 9 trailer is any indication, Blomkamp's Halo could have been much more than your run-of-the-mill sci-fi shoot 'em up.
