The Best And Worst of SXSW (And All Those In Between)

Beginners Film
Yeah, yeah, I know. This post is like two whole months overdue. But now I’ve had to marinate over my thoughts and feelings of all the SXSW movies I saw all those months ago. I’m better prepared now to recommend you towards a film (or completely sway you from never seeing such atrocious filth). So, really, I waited this long for YOU.

Let’s start with the Merely Meh Films:

Merely Meh Films:
Bag of Hammers
This film tried to touch me with its story of two losers attempting to grow up by adopting a small boy whose shitty mother abandons him, but it didn’t quit get there for me.

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop
I wanted to like this documentary about Conan O’Brien’s tour but the best parts were just watching him be kind of a dick to everyone.

Hesher
I kinda liked this film, but it didn’t blow me away. Could have used more character development, but it’s worth a look.

Natural Selection
This film won the Audience Award during the festival, and the movie was okaaaaay—not bad but not exceptional. Rachael Harris was great in her role, though.

The Worst of the Worst
The Future
This Miranda July film tried so effing hard to be witty and quirky, but it just came off as weird and awful.

Our Day Will Come
This is, perhaps, one of THE WORST MOVIES I HAVE EVERRRRRRRRR SEEN. I saw it merely because it had Vincent Cassel in it, but it’s awful and I have no clue what was going on with these two French redheads who decide to go on a murder spree.  I felt terrible for getting Greg to go see it with me.

The Awesomest
The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway
I smiled the whole way through.

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
Funny and engaging. Read Eric’s review.

Win Win
This movie was incredibly acted, well-written, and beautifully directed. GO SEE IT.

Beginners
This movie was my absolute favorite of SXSW. It was delightful and charming with amazing characters. Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Plummer all captivated me the whole way through. It was an absolute treat to watch. Catch it later this summer and then thank me.
