Jeepers Creepers, it's The Mystery Team!

No mystery too big, and no mystery too small. In their heyday The Mystery Team were the lovable little neighborhood sleuths in the vein of Encyclopedia Brown. Their childlike innocence was so charming as they got down to the root of who stepped on a bug. Now, these three boys are all grown up, but they haven't shaken their childlike sense of wonder or their foolish games of solving simple mysteries for a dime. The cases have dried up, and now people are tired of these 18 year-old man-boys. The boys seem ready to hang up their magnifying glasses until one last case comes knocking on their door, and this time it's a real mystery.  One big case. Zero clue.

more after the jump...

This seems like a pretty innocent, cute tale from Derrick Comedy, the guys who brought the internet Bro Rape, but rest assured these sweet little boys come bearing an R-rating. And they earn the shit out of it. Our three young detectives find themselves confronted with grizzly murders, drug dealers, cocaine, and strippers. But what I found most entertaining and enjoyable about the feature debut from this sketch comedy team was that, instead of stringing together a series of hit-and-miss sketches, they actually wrote a compelling and entertaining mystery film. Yeah you will laugh until you almost pee, but all the humor takes place in scenarios that service the story, not vice versa.

All the three stars are funny, but Donald Glover, in particular, stands out as the guy to watch out for. He's been in a couple of things, and has been a writer on 30 Rock (which might explain why Tracy Morgan is so funny), but I feel like it's only a matter of time until this kid blows up. You will also see a couple of familiar faces in cameo roles, but I won't spoil any surprises for you.

Mystery Team came out of nowhere for me and left me feeling pleasantly surprised. The camera work is surprisingly good for a feature of such a low budget, and despite an overall amateurishness about the project, it's really quite enjoyable. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will most likely see some boobies and/or a toilet bowl full of fecal matter.
