The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Dark Knight Frost/Nixon Frozen River Gran Torino Iron Man Milk WALL-E Wendy and Lucy The Wrestler
We know the Golden Globes' ceremony is like the homecoming dance compared to the prom. It's fun, and it's a big deal, but it's no effing prom. So granted whoever wins at the Globes isn't likely to brag about it versus an Oscar, but stillllll....there are some clear omissions from some categories, and we're here to point them out. Feel free to comment and let us know if you think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a bunch of idiots or geniuses.
Best Picture, Drama THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON FROST/NIXON THE READER REVOLUTIONARY ROAD SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE Okay, so yes, Benjamin Button is THAT good, as is Slumdog, and we've heard good things about Revolutionary Road and Frost/Nixon, but a couple of films we'd rather see on this list? I dunno...maybe The Dark Knight, perhaps? While Ledger got his deserved nom, the Batman flick was shut out of some major categories, such as this one AND Best Director. Also odd is the omission of Milk, given how well it's done with the New York, L.A., and Broadcast critics.
Best Actor, Drama LEONARDO DICAPRIO – REVOLUTIONARY ROAD FRANK LANGELLA – FROST/NIXON SEAN PENN – MILK BRAD PITT – THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON MICKEY ROURKE – THE WRESTLER I actually have no qualms with any of these, although, it's a wee bit surprising that Clint Eastwood was left off for Gran Torino considering how much the HFPA loves the old geezer.
Best Actress, Drama ANNE HATHAWAY – RACHEL GETTING MARRIED ANGELINA JOLIE – CHANGELING MERYL STREEP – DOUBT KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS – I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG (IL Y A LONGTEMPS QUE JE T’AIME) KATE WINSLET – REVOLUTIONARY ROAD I've heard absolutely nothing about Kristin Scott Thomas' performance, so that nomination over Cate Blanchett's exquisite performance in Benjamin Button is a bit of a shocker here.
Best Picture, Comedy/Musical BURN AFTER READING HAPPY-GO-LUCKY IN BRUGES MAMMA MIA! VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA In Bruges' nomination was a little unexpected too. While enjoyable, it didn't necessarily seem like normal Golden Globe fare. I thought Last Chance Harvey would have for sure snuck in here.
Best Actor, Comedy/Musical JAVIER BARDEM – VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA COLIN FARRELL – IN BRUGES JAMES FRANCO – PINEAPPLE EXPRESS BRENDAN GLEESON – IN BRUGES DUSTIN HOFFMAN – LAST CHANCE HARVEY Interesting selection actually. I'm surprised Franco didn't receive a nom for Milk in best supporting and received one for Pineapple Express instead. Usually this category is a bunch of bullshit filler, but this is a pretty good mix.
Best Actress, Comedy/Musical REBECCA HALL – VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA SALLY HAWKINS – HAPPY-GO-LUCKY FRANCES MCDORMAND – BURN AFTER READING MERYL STREEP – MAMMA MIA! EMMA THOMPSON – LAST CHANCE HARVEY Okay, Rebecca Hall was by no means the biggest role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and she was by no means remotely funny. So, I would not agree with her nom. No offense, I think she's very talented, but no. While I didn't love the film as much as everyone else did, I thought SURELY Sarah Jessica Parker would be in this category for the Sex and the City movie.
Best Supporting Actor TOM CRUISE – TROPIC THUNDER ROBERT DOWNEY JR. –TROPIC THUNDER RALPH FIENNES – THE DUCHESS PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN – DOUBT HEATH LEDGER – THE DARK KNIGHT TOM CRUISE? Are you shitting me? Over Franco? Honestly?!
Best Supporting Actress AMY ADAMS – DOUBT PENELOPE CRUZ – VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA VIOLA DAVIS –DOUBT MARISA TOMEI – THE WRESTLER KATE WINSLET – THE READER To be honest, I think all these ladies deserve their noms, but someone needs to be booted out to make room for Button's Taraji P. Henson. To ignore her performance is to deny one of the most touching characters in that film.
Best Director DANNY BOYLE – SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE STEPHEN DALDRY – THE READER DAVID FINCHER – THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON RON HOWARD – FROST/NIXON SAM MENDES – REVOLUTIONARY ROAD So, holy shit, this is like the Holy Grail of incredible directors, and I don't disagree with any of these either, but again, someone needs to go to make room for Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight.
So, what do you think Movie Pressers? Did the HFPA nail it or miss the mark entirely? We're a little 50-50 right now.
Summit Entertainment is about to hire Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) as the shepherd for New Moon, the second installment of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling Twilight series. Weitz is best-known for his work with his brother Paul. The two directed and produced American Pie and then were nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay for About a Boy, which they also co-directed.
Chris' first solo directing gig, The Golden Compass, didn't do well stateside but was a hit internationally. Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, has grossed more than $141 million so far, but Hardwicke had clashed with the studio during production. Weitz has a solid relationship with Summit's top brass; he's considered easy to work with and has experience with special effects.
"He's the quality-of-life-choice," says one source. While Summit insists "we have not yet signed Chris Weitz to do New Moon," and Weitz's agency says no deal has been signed, other sources say the deal is imminent, and that Summit has stopped negotiations with other potential Moon directors. Summit plans to officially announce this hiring decision on Sunday, Dec. 14, and could have Weitz in Vancouver, B.C. as early as Monday to start pre-production on the film.
Could a man actually make Twilight's sequel better or worse? Does it need a woman's touch to touch the hearts of tweens everywhere? We dunno...
Hugh Jackman, the reigning Sexiest Man Alive, has been chosen to host the 81st annual Academy Awards ceremony, to take place Feb. 22
The Australia star, 40, who'll be hosting the Oscars for the first time, was selected "because we want the ceremony to be fun," says Laurence Mark, producer of the telecast.
"He can hold the screen and he can hold a stage. It doesn't hurt that he looks amazing in a tuxedo and he's the Sexiest Man Alive."
Wow, is that all it takes to be an Oscar host? How the hell did Bob Hope and Billy Crystal manage to get the gig so many times? And don't get me started on Whoopi...
Jackman won an Emmy in 2005 for hosting the 59th annual Tony Awards in 2004. He was also nominated as host of the Tonys in 2005.
ABC will broadcast the Oscar ceremony live from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 22.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (24% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week
Sure its reviews aren't the best, but for this pick of the week we went with what we were most excited about since we didn't get around to reviewing anything for you. In this remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic, Keanu Reeves stars as the alien who comes to earth. Many critics are calling it a CGI overloaded film with little substance. We, on the other hand, don't care because there is something about that wooden mug of Keanu's that makes uswant to watch his big budget outings. Why? Because Constantine was awesome.
Delgo - (16% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)
The oft delayed, non publicized, poorly reviewed Delgo finally hits screens this weekend, and from the looks of it, no one is going to care. The land of Jhamora is torn apart by the mutual prejudice of two peoples—the winged Nohrin, masters of the skies, and the terrestrial Lockni, who harness the mystical powers of the land. With talent like Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt how can this not open at number one, right?
Nothing Like the Holidays - (51% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)
It's Christmastime, and the far-flung members of the Rodriguez family are converging at their parents' home in Chicago to celebrate the season and rejoice in their youngest brother's safe return from combat overseas. John Leguizamo, Freddie Rodriguez, Alfred Molina, and Debra Messing star in this Latin-themed generic holiday film that has little to offer outside its talent.

Christian "I'm Batman" Bale stars as an older John Connor in the year 2018. Judgment Day has come and gone, and he is being forced to deal with the world he had been trained for. A world...kinda like the world in Transformers. Seriously, compare the movie posters, HERE and HERE. Things that make you go hmmm right? Couple that with the fact they decided to add the world's largest Terminator into this film that can shoot from his over the shoulder canon and I feel a little betrayed. Apart from that though the trailer looks decent enough to warrant throwing your hard earned American dollars away for some summer escapism fun. And who doesn't love Common in a supporting role?

There's only two more Tuesdays left before Christmas and it seems like studios are really trying to make them count. Head on over to our DVD Release Section and see what's cooking for you on this fine Tuesday. Do you want The Dark Knight ridiculous person's collectors edition? Maybe some classic Jim Carrey films? Maybe you just wanna watch a good documentary or invite some friends over for a marathon viewing of the latest season of Lost before it's premiere in January. I don't know, I just make the lists, the deciding is for you.
Well, it appears America has voted, and the decision is: America loves sub-par Vince Vaughn Holiday films. Seriously, the movie is not good, and it's not worth $10, but Vaughn is funny, and there are some moments that will pull out a belly giggle. I just hope he doesn't get the impression that this is all we want from him. I miss R-rated Vince Vaughn and indie movie Vince Vaughn, heck I even miss Jurassic Park II Vince Vaughn. Run over to our Box Office Section to check out how much punishment the Punisher was able to deliver as well as all the others.
