Empire Magazine posted the first images of Transformers 2 (More of More Than Meets the Eye?). You can see where Michael Bay incorporated Shia LeBeouf's recent hand injury due to his car accident, but more importantly, why are they in Cairo?

Third "Narnia" film deader than a door nail? 12/31/2008
0 Comments

Walt Disney Studios announced over XMAS that they will not be co-producing and co-financing the adaptation of CS Lewis' The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third of the Narnia films. This leaves Walden Media, the other big force behind the films, to find another partner if the film is indeed to hit screens in 2010.Disney cited "budgetary and logistical" reasons for the move, which probably translates as "it's very expensive, and the last one didn't do so brilliantly at the box office". Prince Caspian made a hair under $420 million at the worldwide box office, compared to $745 million for its predecessor The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Prince Caspian also cost in the region of $200 million, and given that The Voyage of the Dawn Treader would present more logistical difficulties given its sea-borne nature, the studio presumably thought it was a bit of a gamble - and the recent failure of other non-Potter kids fantasy films like The Golden Compass may further have put the wind up them. Disney's withdrawal also casts doubt on the involvement of talent like planned director Michael Apted and screenwriter Steven Knight.

Does anyone care about the Narnia films anymore?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - (77% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week

Check out our review HERE.

Valkyrie - (62% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Uh oh, we reviewed that one too. Check it out HERE.

Bedtime Stories - (15% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

We've been busy and that's out Christmas gift to you. We reviewed this too! Check it out HERE.

Doubt - (74% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams fill out the all star, vying for another Oscar cast. Adapted from the Pulitzer and Tony award winning play that tells the story of winds of political change sweeping through a community and a local Catholic school. Critical consensus tells us Doubt succeeds on the strength of its top-notch cast, who successfully guide the film through the occasional narrative lull.

Marley & Me - (52% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

John Grogan's bestselling book about his Labrador retriever bounds onto the screen with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston starring as a couple who adopt the badly behaved but much-loved dog. Critical consensus tells us pet owners should love it, but Marley and Me is only sporadically successful in wringing drama and laughs from its scenario.

The Spirit - (15% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Adapted from the classic comic, by a classic comic artist, Frank Miller adapts the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the Octopus has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. Critical consensus tells us though its visuals are unique, The Spirit's plot is almost incomprehensible, the dialogue is ludicrously mannered, and the characters are unmemorable.

Choose wisely, and Happy Holidays to everyone. Thanks for reading!

More "Dredd" heading our way. 12/23/2008

Yup, thats right, Judge Dredd is making his way back to the big screen on his quest for justice. Stallone won't be yelling out, "I am the law!", this time though. DNA films has snatched up the rights for the reimaging, the DNA films that made Danny Boyle's Sunshine and 28 Days and Weeks Later.

“We can’t give away too many details at this point, but we’re looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen,” wrote Rebellion/2000 AD CEO and Creative Director Jason Kingsley.

Box Office Results Dec. 19-21 12/23/2008

As it turns out Jim Carrey is still the king, at least when it comes to this past weekend's showdown of the 20 million dollar man between he and Will Smith. Smith and Carrey had the smallest opening grosses in a while, especially when it comes to main stream films, but it appeared the overall box office was in a slump. Studios blamed it on poor weather, but limited releases had no problem packing in sold out crowds, so make your own conclusions. Check out full results over in our Box Office Results Section.

Stephen Chow is no longer directing "The Green Hornet" 12/19/2008

And the hearts of many deflate. But fear not loyal Movie Pressers, Chow is still staying on to slap on the mask once donned by Bruce Lee. He just isn't directing. Why you might ask? Well it appears there are some "creative differences" going on between everyone, and Chow has stepped down. Who's going to replace him? Yet to be determined, but we are still going to be seeing Seth Rogen team up with Chow from a script by Rogen.

There's not truth to this, but after having seen Stephen Chow's film, I imagine he probably wanted to take it in a wacky weird direction with some way over the top shenanigans that wouldn't have melded well with the script and tone everyone else was looking for. What do you guys thing? Saddened? Or cautiously optimistic?

The Wrestler -  (97% on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week

Darren Aronofsky has crafted his best reviewed film yet, and no one seems afraid to say it while heaping praise and awards on the man and its star. The Wrestler tells the story of a battered and broken wrestler (Mickey Rourke) well past his prime but giving it one last go--to exit the grand arena on his own terms. But the film is so much more than that, centering the story on characters that will wrench your heart. Yes, you can check your local listings, but no, you probably won't find it listed until it expands in late December to early January unless you live in NYC or LA.

Yes Man - (39% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Check out our full review HERE.

Seven Pounds - (29% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Will Smith reunites with his Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino to tell the story of plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.  Critics are calling it the Pursuit of Misery with its morose story and illogical plot.

The Tale of Desperaux - (47% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

When the Princess of Dor goes missing, only tiny Despereaux -- recently rejected from the Mousedom for his differences from other mice - comes to the rescue. Most critics are saying it's visually stunning but lacks the charm and magic of another rodent-starring feature.
