Movie Releases Nov. 26th 11/26/2008

It's the special holiday version of the movie releases. That's right, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and that means you guys get your movies early this week in Hollywood's effort to capitalize on your familial discomfort. (Yes, Hollywood knows your Uncle Carl makes you uncomfortable and the only way to tolerate him is to sit in a darkened theater to pass the time.)

Australia
- (49% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week

Baz Luhrman directs the sweeping epic set in northern Australia before World War II, where an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man (steamy Hugh Jackman) in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand. Critical consensus it that Kidman sucks, Jackman's awesome, as is Luhrman's direction. We missed our screening, but despite the critical response, we are still stoked to see it.

Four Christmases - (22% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Vince Vaugh and Reese Witherspoon struggle to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. Critical response tells us it's a paint by numbers scripts with a couple of laughable moments, but an overall bad time at the theater. Though I'm sure couples who hate each other's familes can have an awkward Thanksgiving day outing seeing this one, asking each other, "I'm not like that am I?"

Transporter 3 - (32% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Production Weekly is reporting that Sony has picked up the rights for a film called Chef, which will be directed by David Fincher and star Keanu Reeves. That's all we got. No plot, no writers, no other cast confirmed. Maybe it'll be based on Bravo's Top Chef? We wish... Anyone wanna guess what the flick could be about?

Ooh la la la. Universal goes Frenchy for "Gainsbourg" 11/25/2008

Hipsters rejoice! Your favorite French gf's dad will finally get a biopic.
Universal’s first local-language French pic will be based on the life of Gaul’s iconic singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, who died in 1991.Serge Gainsbourg (vie heroique) will mark graphic novelist Joann Sfar’s debut as a helmer.

Eric Elmosnino has been tapped to play the chanteur who was as famous for his glamorous lovers, including Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, as he was for penning such hits as “Je t’aime ... moi non plus.”

French model Laetitia Casta will play Bardot, with Mylene Jampanoi set to play Gainsbourg’s last paramour, Bambou, and Anna Mouglalis tapped to play French singer Juliette Greco, who collaborated with Gainsbourg for many years.

Pic will trace Gainsbourg from his youth growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris, when he was called Lucien Ginsberg, through to his transformation into the hard-living showman. He died in 1991 at age 62.

The pic will be released in France in 2010.

Ready to wet yourself for the sexiest movies of all time? 11/25/2008

Remember last week when I posted about my love for EW's photo lists? Well, they finally counted down to their sexiest movies of all time. What topped the list? Certainly not my pick, that's for fuck sure. Other standouts included Body Heat, His Girl Friday, and the Notebook. Whatever, sue me, it's still sexy. They also made a list for the least sexy movies in existence. Requiem for a Dream? Definitely makes me never wanna have sex again. What do y'all think?

Fresh from a massive opening day for Twilight, Summit Entertainment has officially greenlit a New Moon sequel. Summit made the widely expected announcement Saturday morning. Twilight generated first-day grosses of $35.7 million from 3,419 playdates on Friday -- including $7 million from Thursday midnight shows.

The vampire thriller's a ready-made franchise for Summit with four books in Stephenie Meyer’s series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.

New Moon is the second title in the series and is centered on Edward Cullen leaving Bella Swan in order to keep her safe from other vampires. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart play the leads in the film.

"I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment," Meyer said in a statement.

Twilight, lit up the Box Office this past weekend despite being a rather pedestrian, CW level production, vampires in high school romantic drama. The film marks the highest opening gross by a female director ever, so that's something, and if you want to hop over to our Box Office Results section to check out how Bolt and the rest of the movies did, you are more than welcome to.

Un-Arrested Development 11/21/2008

Never give up on your dreams, because well...you just don't do that...or on breakfast.  Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard have apparently secured deals for the long gestating Arrested Development movie.

The possible migration of the critically acclaimed but short-lived Fox series to the big screen has been a hot topic among fans for the past year. Speculation has been fueled by cast members of the show, including Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor, who have been frequently quoted in interviews that a feature adaptation is in the works.

Hurwitz, who created and exec produced the Emmy-winning series, is on board to write the film as well as direct with help from Howard. The series, from Imagine TV and 20th TV, was a pet project of Howard, who had a lot to do with its distinct visual style. In the final episode, Howard, playing himself, heard the Bluth TV family's pitch of their story and liked it for a movie.

Bolt - (84% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week

Check out our REVIEW HERE.

Twilight - (44% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother re-marries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Edward is a vampire, but he doesn't have fangs and his family is unique in that they choose not to drink human blood. Intelligent and witty, Edward sees straight into Bella's soul. Soon, they are swept up in a passionate, thrilling and unorthodox romance. We have a strong desire for this movie to flop, is that so wrong?
