Box Office Results: Going to Montana 04/13/2009
0 Comments

Well Box Office Results are in, and Miley Cyrus has left me baffled like a Tyler Perry movie. Seriously? Are girls that nuts about a semi-talents unattractive award looking teen? Must be because America has provided this Easter weekend with the number two April weekend of all time, behind that weeks Fast and Furious opening. Check out our results section to see how much Fast slowed down as well as how much people didn't pay attention to Dragonball Evolution.

Observe and Report - (55% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week

Check out our review HERE.
Dragonball: Evolution - (21% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

"The live action adaptation centers on a team of warriors, each of whom possesses special abilities. Together, they protect Earth from a force bent on dominating the Universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name." That's what Fox released as a synopsis...seriously? That's the best they could do? Well critics are saying the film is executed with little panache or invention, and lacks the magic that made the books upon which it was based a cult sensation.
Hannah Montana The Movie - (43% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Hannah's star continues to climb, while Miley is in danger of being lost in the shuffle. To help bring her back to Earth, Miley's dad takes her to Crowley Corners, Tennessee, where there's plenty of love and laughter in the air. Consensus says while youthful Miley fans won't complain, Hannah Montana the Movie is little more than a formulaic Disney Channel episode stretched thin.

The new Mike "Office Space" Judge comedy just got a trailer. Extract follows the personal and professional problems endured by the owner, The Jason Bateman, of a flower-extract plant, including a wife (Kristen Wiig) who won't sleep with him, a new hottie temp (Mila Kunis) and Ben Affleck as a major stoner/bartender/friend type.

Miley Cyrus, star of Walt Disney Pictures’ Hannah Montana The Movie, announced exclusively on Disney.com today that she will be surprising unsuspecting audiences during her film’s opening weekend.

It’s all part of Disney’s new Opening Weekend Surprise program, in which moviegoers who show up to the theatre for a 2009 Walt Disney Pictures film during its national opening weekend could be treated to a truly magical Disney experience.  This might include surprise in-theater appearances by talent from the film, live performances and more.  Moviegoers won’t know in advance which cities, theaters or show times will be selected.

“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to surprise my fans this weekend.  I’m really proud of Hannah Montana The Movie, and wanted to do something special to reward the loyal Disney fans who show up opening weekend.”

Along with this announcement, Disney has launched Disney.com/surprise (www.disney.com/surprise), a web site dedicated to giving fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes perspective of each Opening Weekend Surprise.  Fans can visit the site now for a special message from Miley, and can return on Monday, April 13 for coverage of the surprises, plus a special treat (which, no you Movie Presser Pervs, is not more semi naked photos of herself.).

Things are getting "Wilder" 04/08/2009

I'm still skeptical of how a 60-word children's book can be made into a full-length feature film, but Spike Jonze makes it easy to believe. With trailers like THIS and movie posters like the most recently released, it appears I may have to stick my head in the sand to make the waiting less painless.

Lucas ready to show his "Red Tails" 04/07/2009

Tuskegee Airmen are finally getting their time from George Lucas, and the wildly unique cast now includes the likes of Cuba Gooding Jr.  and Method Man. The Anthony Hemingway directed flick Red Tails has popped up from time to time for Lucas in interviews, but an announcement today indicates that he has his actors and they’re ready to suit up and start production.

“I’ve been wanting to do Red Tails for 20 years, and we’ve finally got the means to showcase the skill of the Tuskegee pilots,” Lucas said in the press release. “We’re working on techniques which will give us the first true look at the aerial dogfighting of the era. And our top-notch cast will really make this story special.”

The movie’s cast also includes Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and Grammy award winner Ne-Yo, as well as a cluster veteran actors from The Wire, listing Tristan Wilds, Rick Otto, Michael B. Jordan and Stacie Davis.

According to the release, Red Tails is set in 1944 during the heat of WWII when the famed pilots stepped up to their fated entry into the war. Relegated to second-class citizens due to the U.S. government’s racist policies at the time, their success under the most dangerous of circumstances earned the group legendary recognition. Hundreds of black airmen would follow them from the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama overseas before the war ended.

Take your charcoal tablets, "Hangover" gets repeat 04/06/2009

The newest flick from Old School director, Todd Phillips, isn't even out yet, and it has already been greenlit a sequel. The Hangover will open June 5th, and Warner Bros. is so confident in it that the studio has asked Phillips to write a script for the possible sequel.

In the comedy, groomsmen take their betrothed friend for a last fling in Las Vegas, then become so caught up in the revelry that they lose the groom.

While studios often wait to see box office results before committing to a sequel, The Hangover has tested strongly, and a trailer brought down the house at ShoWest.

This sequel is the second in the past week to be put in motion before opening day of the first film. Though Star Trek doesn't open until May 8, Paramount Pictures already has started the countdown on a second installment.

The studio hopes to begin production on The Hangover sequel late this year with all the key players, including the delightful Bradley Cooper.

We totally dug the trailer, which you can see below, but this still feels like jumping the gun a wee bit early to us.

Box Office Results - Race to the cash! 04/06/2009

Well it looks like 2 Fast 2 Furious times 2 divided by 4: The Race to the Easy Paycheck has proven to be the biggest opening of the year as Vin Diesel and Paul Walker phoned it in for their big pay day. I suppose reviews that read "Incomprehensible", "Out of gas", and "More like slow and cranky" didn't keep audiences at bay. Feel free to click on over to our Box Office Results Section and see how the rest of the movies fared, including our pick of the week Adventureland.

Adventureland - (86% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) Pick of the Week

Superbad director Greg Mottola is back with this comedy/drama about a floundering college grad (Jesse Eisenberg) who decides to work at an amusement park when his post-graduation plans fall through. Critics are saying it's full of humor and nostalgia, and that Adventureland is a sweet, insightful coming-of-age comedy that will resonate with teens and adults alike.

Fast & Furious - (21% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Heading back to the streets where it all began, the original team is back to blast muscle, tuner and exotic cars across Los Angeles and floor through the Mexican desert. When a crime brings them back to L.A., fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto reignites his feud with agent Brian O'Conner. But as they are forced to confront a shared enemy, Dom and Brian must give in to an uncertain new trust if they hope to outmaneuver him. Consensus tells us while Fast and Furious features the requisite action and stunts, the filmmakers have failed to provide a competent story or compelling characters. Oh, and they say the acting is real bad too.
