Carrey and Gyllenhaal are "Damn Yankees" 02/27/2009
0 Comments

From stage to screen, Damn Yankees is picking up an all star cast and a modern twist. The film will be a contemporary version of the 1955 musical, but will stick closely to the same story of Joe Boyd, a happily married man who suffers from a lifelong devotion to a losing baseball team. One night, Joe meets the Devil, who convinces him to sell his soul and become Joe Hardy, the all-star slugger the team is desperate for. Boyd can escape the deal, as long as he does it before the World Series — but to keep him tempted, the Devil hires the gorgeous Lola to seduce him.

Jake Gyllenhaal will play Boyd, and Jim Carrey will play the Devil (surprise, surprise). There is currently no one cast as Lola nor does the project have a director. Who's excited?

Movie Releases Feb. 27 02/27/2009

Well, it's a first. This week I am refusing to choose a pick of the week based on the fact there are only two releases, and I can't in good conscience recommend you see either of them. One wasn't reviewed for critics, and the other is very likely to make you sterile, so view at your own risk.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - (00% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

Powerful forces are converging on the streets of Bangkok. They are warriors, some of whom possess extraordinary abilities, all of whom are determined to see their side prevail. Some fight for us; the others for unlimited power. Now, they are preparing for the ultimate battle -- of terror versus beauty, light versus darkness, and good versus evil. Critics seem to miss the flamboyance of the Raul Julia/Jean Claude Van Damme original and recommend viewing only to blind people. So, suffice to say, this movie is probably really really really bad.

The Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience - (38% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes)

The Jonas Brothers head to the big screen—in Disney Digital 3-D™—in a high-energy Walt Disney Pictures rockumentary feature film event from director Bruce Hendricks ("Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus:... The Jonas Brothers head to the big screen—in Disney Digital 3-D™—in a high-energy Walt Disney Pictures rockumentary feature film event from director Bruce Hendricks (Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert). The film blends excerpts from the Brothers' red-hot "Burning Up" concert tour, including guest performances from Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift, with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, off-the-wall segments, a never-before-heard song, swarming fans and a lot of JB-style humor—giving fans never-before-seen insights into the lives of Kevin, Joe and Nick. Critics seem to disagree with the films intent, saying it doesn't offer any insight into their lives, does very few favors for the brothers, and that the films musical charms wear out around minute 30 of the 76 minute run time. But hey...at least you get to see it in 3D right?

Move over Mr. T, The B Team is here. 02/26/2009

Are you ready for more retarded Will Ferrell? Because Adam McKay and Will are up to their old tricks again and are currently shopping around their latest comedy, The B Team. The film will pair Ferrell up with none other than Mark Walhberg in a tale of mismatched cops.

I know Will Ferrell is a talented man, but I get a little tired of his same old schtick, I'd much prefer he spend his time doing more stuff like Stranger than Fiction than spending his time making this. What do you guys think?

Samuel Jackson is back MotherF*&$@ers! 02/26/2009

That's right kiddies, you can all put down your picket signs and angry letters, Mr. Samuel L. Jackson has signed on for nine films with Marvel Studios. Wha?! Yes, he's set to play Nick Fury in the following: Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, and any sequel that they might spawn. Pretty much anything they want to do with the character, they have the option of using Jackson.

Gondry to direct "Green Hornet?" Holy shit. 02/24/2009

We here at TheMoviePress were excited when Stephen Chow signed on to direct and star in Seth Rogen's Green Hornet, and when he left in December due to artisitic differences with the studio, we were afraid that Green Hornet would not come to fruition--and that Rogen's weight loss was all for naught.

However, rumor is on the streets, ok the EW streets, that Science of Sleep director Michel Gondry is in talks to step in. Plans are to begin production in the summer with the project still slated to be one of Sony's tentpoles for summer 2010.

This is incredible news. Gondry will bring some great vision to what will be a huge film. Or will it fall flat like Ang Lee's Hulk? Thoughts?

Holy frozen bananas! Cera finally joins "Development" film. 02/24/2009

While Ron Howard said that Arrested Development was definitely happening at Sunday's Oscars, well, now we know that the flick won't be George Michael-less! Michael Cera, who has had tons of breakout success lately, had been the lone hold out from the Bluth cast, until today apparently, when he finally agreed to join the film. Wee!

According to insiders, the movie may go as early as the end of the year, if they can put it together in time.

Can we all breathe a sigh of relief now?

Box Office Results Feb. 20-22 02/23/2009

Madea may have gone to jail, but the Box Office has gone back to shit. I don't understand how on a typically slow Oscar weekend a movie with bad reviews and a niche market can muster $41 million dollars. But there's no use is dissecting how Tyler Perry does it, because he does. At least he's a good person who gives back to his community like no other, it almost makes seeing his bad movies succeed worthwhile. Check out the Box Office Results section and see just how hard Jason feel, or if American was still taken with Taken.

And the Oscar goes to... 02/23/2009

It's finally over. The leak results were fake, Hugh Jackman ended up being awesome, and the new Oscars were...well good and bad. Either way, check out the results below and let us know what you think.

BEST PICTURE
Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight) A Celador Films
Production, Christian Colson, producer

- I'm okay with this, it was a really really good movie.

LEAD ACTOR
Sean Penn in Milk (Focus Features)

-He did a good job, but come on, when will Rourke have another shot at it? You had to give it to him.

LEAD ACTRESS
Kate Winslet in The Reader (The Weinstein Company)

If she's got an Oscar in her hand for any movie role, I'm happy.

DIRECTOR
Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight)

One of the best and underrated directors finally has his day.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Departures -- Japan (Regent Releasing) A Departures Film
Partners production

-Didn't see it.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (Warner Bros)

-Can't stop that freight train of success. He really was good though.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (The Weinstein
Company)

A crazy Spanish lady, playing a crazy Spanish lady...whatever.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Dustin Lance Black for Milk (Focus Features)

It was a good screenplay, but there were other more deserving in this category.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Simon Beaufoy for Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight)

No surprise or complaints here.

ANIMATED FEATURE

No Presto? Wtf?

ART DIRECTION

for set decoration on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(Paramount and Warner Bros)

Good Call.

COSTUME DESIGN
Michael O'Connor for The Duchess (Paramount Vantage,

Why do they always have to give it to this kind of movie?

MAKEUP
Greg Cannom for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(Paramount and Warner Bros)

Was there any doubt?

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Anthony Dod Mantle for Slumdog Millionaire (Fox
Searchlight)

Filming slums is not harder or more impressive than The Dark Knight or Benjamin Button.

LIVE ACTION SHORT FIRM

Mephisto Film production

Missed it.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
James Marsh and Simon Chinn for Man on Wire (Magnolia
Pictures) A Wall to Wall production

Bros)

Too good to deny.

SOUND EDITING
Richard King for The Dark Knight (Warner Bros)

Yes!

SOUND MIXING
Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke and Resul Pookutty for Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight)

I didn't get this win, but then again I don't totally understand sound mixing.

FILM EDITING
Chris Dickens for Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight)

Good editing, but maybe others should have won.

ORIGINAL SCORE
A.R. Rahman for Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight)

Good score, really a toss up for me.

ORIGINAL SONG
"Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight),
music by A.R. Rahman, lyrics by Gulzar

Apparently belting out 'Jai Ho' over and over again is better than singing a song about a battered down man, or the treasures of the earth.
